Abstract
It is generally known that Akebiae Lignum, Pachymae Fungus, Plantaginis Semen and Polygoni aviculareae Herba have been conventionally used as the diuretics by the Chinese medicinal herb doctors and a number of laymen.
However, their pharmacological researches concerning the characteristics and active ingredients have not been fully conducted yet.
The changes of urine volume and pH as well as urinary electrolytes (Na+, K+ and Cl-) were measured at 15 minutes interval for 2 hours after the admini¡þstration of ALWE (Akebiae Lignum water extract), PFEE (Pachymae Fungus ethyl alcohol extract), PSEE(Plantaginis Semen ethyl alcohol extract) and PHEE (Polygoni aviculareae Herba ethyl alcohol extract) in rabbits.
The results were as follows:
1) Urine volume as well as excretion rate of urinary electrolytes (Na+, K+ and Cl-) in ALWE-treated group was significantly higher than that of saline-treated control group. Urinary pH of ALWE-treated group was lower than that of saline-treated control group.
2) No significant changes of urine volume, pH and urinary electrolytes Na+, K+ and Cl-) excretion were observed in the PFEE-treated group, compared with those of saline-treated control group throughout the experiments.
3) Urinary pH of PSEE-treated group was significantly lower than that of saline-treated control group. No significant changes of urine volume and urinary electrolytes (Na+, K+ and Cl-) excretion were observed in PSEE-treated group, compared with those of saline-treated control group.
4) Cl- excretion of PHEE-treated group was significantly higher than that of saline-treated control group. No significant changes of urine volume, pH and
